Nice forcast for tonight.

13:00

A calm day on the bay.

An easy breeze blew at our backs as we headed out to our usual spotting grounds and the sun even shone on us for a while.

We spotted a couple of harbour porpoises on the way out. We didn't get any good looks at them, which is quite usual for porpoises, shy little things.

We were seeing quite a lot of birds out there, northern gannets, cormorants, and of course our ever present fulmars. So that means more fish in the bay, and that in turn means more whales in the bay.

Still, we only saw a few more porpoises as we headed back in.

So we gave everyone a free return, valid for the next two years.

It will be great night - high activity and no clouds :)

12:45

Today we set course west, towards the usual feeding whale/dolphin grounds, it is an area surrounding an underwater lava field called Syðra-Hraun. The area is usually teeming with fish when the conditions are right. On arrival we encountered plenty of birds from gillemots, kitty wake seagulls and especially gannets plunge feeding in large numbers. We thought that may be the whales like minke whales or Humpback whales are entering the bay today, but we found none.

On our way back, when we were just half an our form harbor we encountered a nice family pod  of white-beaked dolphins, numbering perhaps a dozen. We approached them and some became rather playful and even bow rode our bout.

These days we are seeing an increase in activity on the bay, more fith under the surface and more birds it is only a matter of when the whales begin to arrive in large numbers after the breeding season is over.

Thanks, Jorge.

We went out and were pretty sure that tonight we would see the Northern Lights and we did.
This time they didn’t tease us or made us wait, they were strong and beautiful the whole time we were out on the sea. They changed and danced for us and gave us plenty of time to photograph them and enjoy their dance on the sky.

Also thank you Brian for sharing this wonderful photo of the Northern Lights.

Today is a bit cold and some wind, but it is nice weather.

Northern Lights:

21:00 - ON

Another night with a good forcast for northern lights!

12:45

When we left the harbour today it was strong breeze from north-east and bit cold, but the sailing was comfortable.
After sailing for a while we encountered plenty of bird spread over large area.
What was most important is that many of these birds were northern garnet. This bird is often associated with whales and dolphins and is very reassuring to finally see the come into the bay in numbers. We are waiting for capelin a small fish gathers in large number this time of year to spawn, that means it is possible that humpback whales will be showing up in the bay soon.
Just yesterday there were group of dolphins but we didn't find them today but stay put there is a lot of life coming in the bay and the situation is changing for the better, especially if the humpback whales follow the capelin.

21:00

Tonight we went out and hoped we would see some great lights. After short time we started to see a little glimpse of green hue on the sky and thought this can’t be it. Luckily we were right this time, the sky decided to tease us before showing us the lights.
They were beautiful this evening and we had a lot of fun showing the to our passengers.

Northern Lights:

Good forecast for tonight....... waited a long time for such a night:)

12:45

A fine day today.

Went out with eastern winds at our back. Rather strong but nothing to bad, the sea doesn't get to rough here with the eastern winds.

The view was quite nice, pretty decent conditions.

And within half an hour we found a ton of white-beaked dolphins.

They were all over the place and quite playful.

Showed themselves nicely and a whole lot of them, probably 20, or more.

This ever increasing number of dolphins in the bay is most promising, we are also seeing a lot of birds and more fish, so I am hoping we'll have something bigger to talk about soon.

The weather looks alright for the next few days, quite cold though.

Hopefully we'll get some more creatures into the bay, even though dolphins are always quite nice.

We will see what the future holds.

A calm wind followed us out west as we headed on our whale search today.

The seas were calm for the first half of the trip and then they got rougher the further out we went.

Nothing to bad though.

We saw a whole bunch of birds, and quite a lot of fish on our echosounder, but no whales.

Or dolphins.

But the scenery was nice and the water was calmer than it has been in a while.

Spring is just around the corner, so things will start to look up again :)

Today we had a respite in the weather there were some waves from yesterday's stormy weather but the wind conditions were calm. After about an hour, sailing west from Reykjavík, we encountered a small group of white beaked dolphins. They stayed nearby, for a good one-hour, taking dives repeatedly in a small area. They seemed to be taking dives near the bottom chasing some demersal fish in the area. This activity allowed us to stay with them for an extended time period without affecting their activities and gave us a chance to take a good look.

Sincerely, Jorge

Guides report:

When we went out today it was cold and snowing. We hoped it would clear up so we sailed towards the bay. After one hour of sailing we had only spoted more snow.
There was a brief clearing out on the regular sighting grounds were we spotted large groups of Shag (a relative of Cormorans and frigate birds). There were also a number of shoals of fish both mid-water and near the bottom, but if there were any cetaceams there we didn't find them.
We hope for better conditions next time.

Thanks, Jorge.

3 days of western storms.

That's a bit much isn't it ?

Well, we headed out again today.

Calm winds, but a freaking boatload of leftover swell.

But hardly anyone got sick.

And then we found some white-beaked dolphins as well.

Just strolling lazily about.

Probably feeding.

Some were big, some were small.

I'm just glad that they were there at all.

I'm now thinking of working this entry into a poem or something of that nature.

Not today, maybe later. ;)

At one point I counted at least nine of the dolphins swimming about in front of us.

Got some good close up looks as well.

The bay seems to be getting livelier as well. Saw a good number of birds today, so fingers crossed for some full-size creatures coming into the bay.

Things are looking up.

The future looks bright. Let's see what it has in store for us.

Guide's Report

Alright. There was a lot of swell as we headed out into the bay this afternoon.

And I don't really know where it came from.

I mean, the west, yeah sure, but I don't know when it built up.

Presumably during the night, but I thought it was supposed to be calm through the night.

Just goes to show that the Gods of Wind and Weather are treacherous and unpredictable.

Not unlike the white-beaked dolphins we saw today.

Unpredictable, that is, they aren't really treacherous....

But we did see quite a lot of them out there. And not far out either.

Maybe 6-7 nautical miles out, and they were spread all over the area.

12-20+ individuals maybe. A lot of calfs as well.

They showed themselves well and lingered for a while. Then they disappeared.

Then we found them again. And then they disappeard again.

This time for good.

It was really pretty out there today.

Snæfellsnes, one of my favorite places in Iceland, looked REALLY nice.

Off in the distance, all shiny and white.

Very nice.

The weather is looking kind of windy in the coming days.

So dress accordingly and eat your seasickness pills.

Things could get rough out there, keep that in mind folks.
